Ironman Lanzarote 2010

Incredible!

Ironman Lanzarote 2010 is now full with 1550 athletes registered as of the 3rd September to take part. There are still some entries available for Lanzarote residents and professional athletes if you haven’t yet confirmed your place. The Ironman event in Lanzarote will be a week earlier this year on Saturday 22nd May 2010.

Week 20 UK, Week 21 DK.

Spoke to Kenneth about the dates. In the future, he is in the hands of the Ironman Association who own the race and have a contract with CLS. He expects but cannot promise that there will be a new contract for 3 or 5 years from 2011 onwards. The date is unlikely to change but could!
Even with no date change, this year's race was on 23rd May in UK week 21, DK week 22 and next year will be on 22nd May in UK week 20 week DK 21..... So TSOs need to buy two weeks to be sure, but looking at my timeshare calendar (attached) I think UK week 20 week DK 21 is the more constant one...... but I'm not sure!

Diploma!

Yes, I came second (as a man) in the Social Tennis last Saturday, my first diploma for some time!

The ones I don't tell you about are when I play as a "ladyman"......

La Isleta - the island on the other side of the lagoon#2

Caravan owners are now being fined if they park on the island, I'm told 1000 euros a time!

This is being enforced not by the local council (ayuntamiento) but from Arrecife on behalf of the Government.....

La Isleta - the island on the other side of the lagoon

Further to the earlier post about the Government buying La Isleta and it being designated as "Protected Natural Space", preventing any bulding development, my sources now tell me that a decision has been made in Madrid on the future of the island.

The roads at both ends of the lagoon will be closed to all vehicles, except bikes, the existing roads will be repaired for use by runners and cyclists. It is hoped the beaches and edges of the lagoon will also be repaired and the lagoon itself cleaned/dredged.

It is also intended that road outside reception will be made "one way" and traffic from the La Santa village direction routed along a new road to the right of the existing one. A new traffic islalnd will be created close to the disco and all vehicles will have to go round it and the approach reception from the direction of the disco.

I don't have a timescale for this yet.

New Development - Update September 2009

Latest news is that a new application for the new hotel and additional sports facilties is being submitted to the Lanzarote Government.

The Lanzarote Government will not approve this application as it is not within the current law and the application will then be referred to the Canary Islands Government in Gran Canaria.

Meetings and discussions with the authorities lead CLS to believe that the Canary Islands Government will then grant a special dispensation, allowing the development to proceed.

Atlantico Restaurant Improvements and New Sun Terrace - September 2009

Major works are in progress to improve the Atlantico Restaurant. Part of the structure od Atlantico has always been "temporary" and this has now been demolished to make way for a brand new permanent building on the same site.

At the same time a large new sun terrace will be constructed on the roof, at first floor level. The cost of these improvements is approximately 200.000 euros.

"Los Dolores" - Fiesta Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes - Saturday 12th September

The Fiesta Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes or the romería Virgen de los Dolores is the biggest traditional fiesta on the island of Lanzarote. Residents make the romería (pilgrimage) from all over the island on foot, dressed in traditional clothing to the tiny village of Mancha Blanca in the municipality of Tinajo. There’s something really moving about seeing thousands of people, brightly dressed, all heading in the same direction – some of them are alone, others are in groups, with donkeys and camels pulling carts or pushing shopping trolleys laden with food and drink for the journey and weekend of festivities.

If you’re staying at CLS and would like to experience los Dolores, you can buy the traditional clothing locally, it's in a lot of shop windows in Arrecife in the weeks leading up to the event, its really worth making the effort to be involved as you will be welcomed by the locals to join in the singing, dancing and festivities. Often off duty Green Teamers go and sometimes CLS organise an excursion. You don't have to dress up though!

Fiestas on Lanzarote

I'm often asked about these by TSOs, so.....

Did you know that April is the only month of the year that Lanzarote does not have a fiesta? Below is a link to the annual calendar of fiesta dates for the island of Lanzarote, apart from these dates there are also the bank holiday dates, known as the Calendario Laboral 2009. Lanzarote follows the Spanish bank holidays, plus a national bank holiday and then local holidays according to the municipality of the island. These fiestas are where you can see some of the traditional Canarian costumes and music, look out for the romería (procession) and verbena (party) in the programmes.
